Whether you have a dedicated laundry room or not, there's no denying that a washer and dryer set takes up a significant amount of space. The solution? Stack them. Sure, not all washers and dryers are designed to be stacked, but many are, allowing you to reclaim valuable square footage by using vertical space instead. Here are steps for safely stacking your washer and dryer so they stay put even during the spin cycle.

Before You Begin

Before starting this project, check that you're working with a stackable washer and dryer set. If you plan to stack a washer and dryer you already own, read the instruction manual to verify that your specific model can be safely stacked. If you're purchasing new models, consult the retailer to confirm your potential purchase is stackable.

After verifying your machines can safely be stacked, purchase a stacking kit, which typically consists of hardware to secure the machines to one another and rubber feet to keep the dryer from sliding around, though more accessories may be included.

A stacking kit may be available for your make and model, but universal stacking kits are also widely available.

Safety Considerations

You shouldn't ever stack machines that aren't intended to be stacked. Just because a washer and dryer are front-loading doesn't mean you can safely stack them.

Additionally, stacking washers and dryers without a stacking kit poses significant safety risks to anyone around the machines. This is especially true during operation, as vibrations can cause the top unit to topple off. Note that all-in-one washer dryers eliminate the need for stacking kits.

Washers and dryers are extremely heavy. To avoid injuring yourself, recruit one or two friends to help lift the appliance.

Instructions

How to Stack a Washer and Dryer

  1. Measure the Space

Measure the area where you intend to stack your washer and dryer to confirm that you have enough horizontal and vertical space. There should be at least 1 inch on each side of the stacked unit and at least 6 inches behind the unit to accommodate the dryer vent.

Take note of the location of the dryer vent, gas lines (if applicable), power outlets, washer drain pipe, and water supply lines to ensure the units will reach them when stacked.

  2. Prep the Appliances

Uninstall the dryer's feet, and place the appliance on a piece of cardboard to protect the floor. If the stacking kit comes with rubber stacking feet, install them on the dryer.

Next, move the washer into the general area where it will be placed, but space it away from the wall slightly to give yourself room to work.

  3. Stack the Dryer

With the help of a friend, lift the dryer on top of the washer. If needed, use appliance lifting straps to make lifting the dryer easier and safer.

Once the dryer is resting on the washer, position it according to the manufacturer's placement guidance. Typically, this will have the dryer slightly overhanging the back of the washer.

Never attempt to stack a washer on top of a dryer. Washers are significantly heavier than dryers, especially when filled with clothes and water.

  4. Mount Stacking Kit Brackets

Use the provided hardware to attach the stacking kit brackets to the washer and dryer, securely tying the two appliances together. Often, this hardware consists of brackets that clip into the bottom of the back of the dryer and then screw into the top of the back of the washer. Different stacking kits require different tools and steps, so choose the necessary tools according to the included hardware.

  5. Move the Stacked Unit into Position

Slowly push the stacked washer and dryer back against the wall, installing and spacing the units from the wall just as you would if they were side by side.

  6. Level the Unit

Use an adjustable wrench to adjust the feet beneath the washer to level the unit and check for wobbling. To do this, start with the feet threaded into the washer as far as possible; then loosen the feet one at a time until all feet are touching the ground, the washer doesn't wobble, and the washer is level.

  7. Test the Appliances

Run a cycle on both appliances and monitor them for wobbling or excess vibration. Adjust the positioning if necessary.

When to Call a Professional

If at any point while stacking the washer and dryer, you are unsure if it's a safe choice, reach out to an appliance professional or licensed contractor. A contractor can assist you in relocating things like dryer vents, water supply lines, drain pipes, gas lines, and electrical receptacles. Additionally, they can provide information regarding local building codes should you decide to relocate your washer and dryer to a closet, kitchen, garage, or other space.
